We have been finding inspiration from the things around us and using things around us as subject matter and as materials. In our sketchbooks, we have been using a variety of media, such as handwriting pens and different pencils to create beautiful drawings inspired by the world around us.

The children thoroughly loved the interactive session and learnt lots of new information about her life and her impact on nursing. The children acted like the ocean during her many travels, as well as helped Mary make her special medicine using mustard seeds. The children even put on their poshest English accents whilst pretending to be Mr Day. It was wonderful to see the children making links in their own learning as well as beginning to make comparisons between Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale.

At the end of the session, the children asked a range of thoughtful questions before waving goodbye to Mary. A brilliant experience for the KS1 children.

The KS1 children proudly performed the poem 'Minibeast Minibeast Move Around' with accompanying actions. They then participated in the whole school songs, for which 'We like the flowers' and 'H is for Harvest' were firm favourites. We are so proud of them all.

In DT this week, the children were given the brief 'design, make and evaluate a fruit kebab for your friends as a healthy snack at your party'. We started the week by identifying different common and exotic fruits, before describing their colour, smell, shape and texture. Using the kindly donated fruit, the children developed their peeling, scooping and chopping skills before partaking in a taste test. The watermelon went down a treat, unlike the avocado, which resulted in the majority of children exclaiming yuck!

The children were then asked to design their fruit kebab and identify the equipment they needed to successfully make their kebab. The following day involved the children making their own fruit kebab. The children skilfully used their knives before sliding the fruit onto their wooden skewer. The children thoroughly enjoyed eating their products before they completed their evaluation.

A great success KS1!

Today, the children were asked to design a wellington boot with a partner. However, to make it more challenging, the pair had to agree on a design as the wellington boots had to be identical, whilst not being allowed to draw on each others. The children worked fantastically, communicating their ideas clearly and working cooperatively with their partner. Well done!

The KS1 children travelled by coach on a sunny Thursday to visit the wonderful aquarium in Skegness. After many 'Are we there yet?' questions, we safely arrived and split into groups to explore. The children were fascinated by the incredible fish tanks and listened carefully whilst they received an informative tank talk. A floor to ceiling glass tank included a multitude of different fish, string rays and sharks! The children then used their creative skills during their draw alive session. The children coloured in a range of sea creatures before they appeared and began to swim on the interactive screen! Whilst not ocean habitat themed, the children loved exploring dino-land! The moving dinosaurs were fantastic and the children were able to explore the large sand pit, digging for fossils! The children were a pleasure to take on the trip and the staff at the aquarium praised their behaviour and manners during the experience. Well done KS1!

The children met the sports coach from Elite, who introduced them to fencing. With the children having any prior experience, they worked their way through some of the simple moves required to be an effective fencer. Armed with their foils (They were foam, I promise!), the children practised their lunging and aiming techniques, imagining they were scoring points by hitting the end of their foil on their partners' chest. After learning some simple defensive moves, the children were prepared to participate in some fencing matches. With their protective helmets on, the children took turns to compete in the matches and to referee, determining whether a point had been scored. The children had wonderful fun and clearly demonstrated their newly developed skills. Another brilliant session during sports week!

They were introduced to New Age Curling! Very few children had even heard of curling, without playing it for themselves, so this was insightful to them all! The children worked alongside the sports coach from Elite to develop their newly found skills. Using the curling stones, the children were challenged to slide their stones towards their opponents' target cones. The children listened carefully to the instructions and concentrated hard to slide the stones precisely. Whilst a few stones went wide or did not reach the intended target to begin with, the children demonstrated their conscientious natures to gain greater accuracy. This was especially apparent during the championship competition at the end of the session. The children were very sporting towards their peers while demonstrating their competitive natures, with many exclamations of joy echoing around the hall when they successfully hit the target cones. Another fantastic session during our sports week!

Shaking, lifting and running underneath were the main activities, with the children enjoying the game of traditional fruit salad! Making a parachute dome brought loud laughter from all, as the children could not believe that the parachute would stay up long enough for them to run and sit underneath. It is possible that the final attempt to get multiple tennis balls through the small hole in the centre of the parachute caused the greatest commotion. Shrieks could be heard when the ball almost went over the edge and loud cheers radiated around when the ball finally fell through the centre. A lovely way to spend the afternoon!

Wow! What a wonderful Sports Day!

After many hours of anxious teachers checking the weather forecast, we were fortunate to have a bright, dry morning to celebrate our sports day! The children were on top form, completing a range of sporting activities in our round-robin. The children demonstrated their determination, agility and resilience whilst jumping, kicking, throwing and running. With their parents and careers watching on, the children beautifully modelled our 5C values and had great fun. When the round-robin concluded, the children moved on to the track events. The flat race was the first to commence with Mrs Worth and Mr Prosser starting the race, and Mrs Capper and the brilliant Year 5 helpers eagerly awaiting the runners at the finishing line, with their stickers at the ready. The children ran superbly with their friends and family cheering them on! The next race involved balancing a quoit or bean bag on their head. With a look of concentration etched on their faces, the children carefully made their way down the track, avoiding the urge to hold onto their quoit or beanbag! Our final race involved our trusty 'big spoons' and, the not so traditional, potatoes! With their outreaching arms, the children tried their best to not drop their potato as they completed the race. However, in usual fashion, the potatoes went everywhere, with the children running after their runaway potato! Lots of laughs could be heard by all and, fortunately, not many squashed potatoes could be seen!

We are extremely proud of every child who participated today. We hope you had as much fun as we did! I am already counting down the hours until our fabulous sports week!

The children initially recapped the names of the continents and oceans using our favourite catchy songs, before being handed a jigsaw puzzle of the world. In teams, they rebuilt the world by taking into account the locations of the continents and oceans. To consolidate their learning, the children completed their own world map using the atlas as a guide and wrote descriptive sentences using their knowledge of compass directions. Fantastic work!

EYFS and KS1 had the privilege of watching the Donaldson class assembly. With their parents watching, Donaldson class discussed their favourite Julia Donaldson books as well as modelled their brilliant whales based on the story 'Snail and the Whale'. They performed their favourite song from our harvest festival, 'Big Red Combine Harvester', as well as the crowd-pleasing 'Santa's lost his hat' from our Christmas concert. The dance moves were a particular highlight! The children also demonstrated their creative natures by retelling aspects of 'The Stick Man' and holding up their stick worry dolls they made in art to their eager audience. The assembly concluded by sharing the summer term story 'The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch' and the children proudly showing their lighthouse models.

Well done Donaldson Class!
